So I'm setting up this project and that in itself has proved to be quite a process. First, I worked out all the logistical issues, installing a large board on the wall, building the lamp stands (thank you Mike), and covered all the widows for consistent lighting.

The next step was to make sure that I had the right exposure set on the bolex camera. To do this, we used a traditional 35mm camera and a light meter to experiment with different aperture settings and shutter speeds, all based on my lighting environment. I'm using two 85 watt halogen bulbs. They cast a certain vignette lighting effect on my drawings, which is a nice happy mistake, because it gives the whole scene a floaty dream like appearance.

Finally, after all the preparations I get to start the animation process. even though I'm using a straight ahead animation technique (as opposed to pose-by-pose) I started with a few pencil tests on regular paper to get a feel for the timing of the piece, how it flows and as a good way to determine how long it was going to take me to get the larger project completed.

While I was animating, I took a series of photographs along the way to document the process. You can click on the images to see enlarged versions.
